We have desktop access through our LAN to both Lexis and Westlaw. The service
on the desktop is at higher speed than that in the Library (dedicated
coomunications lines). When introduced in February of 1993, we offered it to
all attorneys who were trained on the systems (virtually everyone) and almost
everyone took us up on it. The training was nothing more than a half hour
threat or warning on efficient use and billing etc. (I can give you my
outline if you are interested). The w/l reps. also did 10-15 minutes each on
more effec tive use.
We have not had any problems so far, in fact, I think people are making better
use of the system. I have seen no evidence of anyone abusing it, and I have
not had to restrict access to anyone. Some people stil prefer to come to the
Library. Oh, paralegals do not have desktop access and must use it in the
Library (best for the supervision factor). Overall, I am extremely pleased
and have never looked back.
