Appended below are the results of the survey of law
libraries with holdings of superseded statutory supplements.
These include pamphlets, pocket parts, combinations of pamphlets
and pocket parts, new looseleaf supplements, and superseded pages
from looseleaf supplements. For the sake of clarity, after the
results you will find the language of the survey. Additions and
corrections are welcome. Please send them to me at the address
provided at the end of this message.
A number of respondents stated that their supplement
retention policies are based on Hein's Superseded State Statute
microfiche set. That is, they throw away their superseded
supplements (e.g., pocket parts) when the fiche arrive. I spoke
with Karen Russi ("Guru" of the superseded state stutute fiche
set) of the William Hein Co. [(800) 828-7571]. Hein NEITHER
includes all of the pocket parts and pamphlets for a given year
in this fiche set, NOR do they market a separate fiche set that
does include all pocket parts and pamphlets. However, Hein
started to include the pocket parts to individual volumes in
their fiche for all states beginning in June, 1992. It is not a
good idea to rely on the Hein superseded state statutes fiche set
for comprehensive coverage of superseded supplements.
Where you notice gaps in holdings below, many of the
libraries would like to fill in and complete their collections.
If your library wishes to dispose of accumulations of old
supplements you may also contact me; I may know of an interested
party.

Original Survey:
A SURVEY WITH A PAYOFF!
Sorry, no money. Here's what you get: You get a
bibliographic listing of which academic law libraries have a
policy of saving which statutory pocket parts (or other
annual supplements) for which states, and how far back those
holdings go. I'll send it out to the law-lib listserv as
soon as possible after April 15, 1994. Kinda like a refund!
The catch (and I hope this isn't taxing): I need your
list of holdings by the 15th. For those of you who are
perennial late filers, I am even willing to grant a two-week
extension beyond that--and you don't have to request it or
make payment on the 15th. Such a deal.
Yes, in many cases we're talking about boxes of old
pocket parts. No individual pocket parts, please; only
complete or near-complete years. Please send your list to
my e-mail address below and not to the listserv. Please be
sure to identify each set by title. We'll need to
differentiate between multiple statute sets (e.g., official
and unofficial) for many jurisdictions.
Obviously, there are some sets (e.g., looseleafs from
AK, NM, NV, etc.) that may represent a challenge to save in
a manner that allows access. If you've worked out a
functional method of saving superseded materials from one of
those sets, please feel free to explain. Thanks,
As you can see, it takes some time to process a refund. Enjoy.
