Good question, Judy! Actually, we had noted ALA's recent action,
dropping _Robert's Rules_ in favor of the _Standard Code of Parliamentary
Procedure_, by Alice Sturgis. This was approved at ALA Midwinter just three
months ago. I believe that the Canadian Library Association and the Medical
Library Association have also switched from Robert's to Sturgis.

The AALL Committee on Constitution and Bylaws did not have time to
investigate the question and make a recommendation to the AALL Board this
year. Not only were we involved in the project to merge the Constitution
and the Bylaws into a single document; we have also had to review bylaws
revisions from many chapters and special interest sections, provide a
constitutional interpretation on the question of associate members serving
as section officers, create a procedures manual for our own committee, and
revise the special interest section "model bylaws." Not all of these tasks
are yet complete!

However, we have already recommended to Vice President Carol Billings
that she add to the "charge" for next year's committee an assignment to
consider whether it would be advisable for AALL to adopt the Sturgis code as
the association's parliamentary authority.
