THIS MESSAGE IS CROSS-POSTED TO AUTOCAT AND LAW-LIB
===================================================
The LC form subject heading "Law reviews" has had its scope note
revised. We learned about this from Marie Whited, Law Catalog Liaison
Specialist at the Law Library of Congress, who mentioned it in a recent
memo addressed to members of the American Assn of Law Libraries TS-SIS
Cataloging and Classification Committee.
The new scope note reads:
Law reviews [May Subd Geog]
Here are entered scholarly periodical publications of a
general nature that emanate from law schools. Law reviews on
specific legal topics are entered under the topic with local
subdivision if appropriate and with the subdivision --Periodicals.
This change was recommended by a subcommittee chaired by Pam Deemer, Emory
University Law Library, in its report submitted at the AALL annual meeting
last July in Boston. Law catalogers had been having difficulty accepting
the justification for the old scope note, which required that these
publications emanate from Anglo-American law schools only. Even the term
"Anglo-American" seemed ambiguous, as some catalogers thought this might
include Commonwealth countries, and other catalogers interpreted it
otherwise.
I had already submitted the copy for the "Subject Headings" column for the
next issue of the newsletter _Technical Services Law Librarian_ when I heard
about this change to "Law reviews." That's why I thought that at least the
law catalogers who subscribe to these lists might want to hear about this
now. Good news, hey? -- Alva
