Description of unit
The UCLA Law Library serves the Law School faculty and students
as their basic library and study resource for teaching and
research. There are approximately 950 law students, 80 faculty
and 45 law school staff. The UCLA School of Law is consistently
among the most successful of law schools in bringing students
from underrepresented groups into the legal profession. The
school has a varied and demanding curriculum, highly productive
faculty, an extensive clinical and externship program and a co-
a curricular program and 8 law reviews. The Law Library also
supplies the legal literature resources for other UCLA faculty,
students and staff with a need for such materials. Heavy use of
the Law Library is made by members of the community, lay people
as well as members of the bench and bar.
The Law Library is one of the larger professional school
libraries on campus. It has a staff of 10 librarians and 14
staff personnel as well as many part)time student employees. It
contains over 430,000 bound volumes and documents and over
110,000 microforms. The Library has over 7,000 serial
subscriptions and has a target acquisitions rate of 11,000
volumes per year. The Law Library is a heavily used facility:
the turnstile count for FY 92/93 was over 500,000 and just under
90,000 reference and information questions were handled. In
addition, the Law Library has an active and expanding program of
services for School of Law faculty and students including more
than 350 instructional sessions for students and extensive
research and document delivery services to the law faculty. The
Library also administers the LEXIS and WESTLAW Permanent
Learning Centers.
The School of Law is currently working on an addition to the
building that will add 42,000 assignable square feet to the Law
Building. Construction is scheduled to begin in June of 1995.
In order to insure that the library will be able to continue to
provide an effective program of services during the two-year
building project, the Law Library will operate out of the old
Graduate School of Management Building (which is located next
door to the Law School) throughout the construction period.
The administration of the Law Library is headed by the Law
Librarian who reports to the Dean of the School of Law. The
