I have attached an announcement for the position of Reference
Librarian at the University of New Mexico School of Law Library.
We are looking for candidates with excellent legal research skills
and a strong service orientation.
The University of New Mexico School of Law Library serves
approximately 320 full-time law students and thirty-five faculty
members. In addition to these primary patrons, the Library is also
the major legal information resource center in the State, serving
the University, the State Bar, the judiciary and the public. The
Law Complex includes the School of Law, the Law Library, a branch
of the New Mexico Court of Appeals, and two nonprofit legal
research and advocacy centers, the American Indian Law Center and
the Institute for Public Law.
The Law Library is currently staffed by four faculty
librarians and fifteen paraprofessionals. The collection contains
approximately 240,000 volumes and over 600,000 microforms. The
Library is part of the University INNOPAC system which includes
access to the holdings of all the University libraries and some
additional research libraries in the state.

University of New Mexico Law School Library
UNM Faculty Position, Non-tenure Track
The Reference Librarian provides sophisticated research and
reference service to the faculty and students of the Law School,
the University, the legal community, and other patrons of the Law
library; participates in evening and weekend reference duty
rotation; performs online searching; prepares bibliographies and
user aids; instructs students in the use of computers for research
and other applications; participates in faculty/librarian liaison
program and collection development.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
1. Providing research assistance to the faculty and students of
the Law School, the bar, bench and public patrons (ie.
answering reference questions, aiding patron research,
conducting on-line searches.
2. Providing instruction and guidance for Law School faculty and
students and staff on the use of electronic resources,
including LEXIS, WESTLAW, and other databases, and the
Internet.
3. Developing tools for user education such as research guides
and compiling legislative histories and bibliographies.
4. Assisting in planning and reviewing goals, procedures,
policies, and manuals of the Information Services Department.
5. Participating in collection development by evaluating and
selecting of information resources in all formats(print, A-V,
microform, CD-ROM, electronic).
6. Participating in evening and weekend reference duty
rotation.
7. Instructing students in the use of computers for research and
other applications.
8. Participating in faculty/librarian liaison program.
9. Lecturing on legal research to various classes within the Law
School.
10. Other duties as assigned by the Library Director.
Qualifications:
Required:
1. MLS and JD degrees from ALA and ABA accredited institutions.
2. Substantial experience in an academic law library.
3. Experience in traditional and computer assisted legal research
methods.
4. Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
5. Familiarity with computer applications and communications
including Internet.
6. Strong service orientation.
7. Evidence of participation in professional organizations.
Preferred:
1. Research skills in international law and/or Indian Law.
