After some of the recent discussions of the costs of Shepard's, I decided
to find out whether or not CD-ROM offered a cost saving alternative. So
I asked Shepard's for some information. I don't have any details yet,
but I did have an interesting phone conversation this afternoon. None
of this information is official, but for what it's worth here are some
things mentioned.
1. Shepard's CD's are not available for all states yet. For example,
NY, Calif and Illinois are available. SD, ND, Minn, IA, WY and NEB
are not. None of the regionals are available yet. The U.S. one
will come out some time this summer about the time the new volumes
do. An entirely speculative price is somewhere in the $2,000 range.
2. I was told that you would save quite a bit over the paper by buying
the CD for New York.
3. The Shepard's contract with Mead and West for Lexis and Westlaw is
just about up and will soon be renegotiated. Look for some price
changes in that realm which might possibly even have an effect on
the educational subscription.
4. The estimated increase in the new versions of Shepard's (bigger
print versions) over the older versions is expected to average about
30% when all is said and done.
Food for thought.
