On February 17th, Bancroft-Whitney (a division of Thomson Legal
Publishing) issued the following press release regarding its
aquisition of Barclay's Law Publishers. Please continue to refer
questions relating to Barclays publications to Barclays.
SAN FRANCISCO, February 17, 1995--Bancroft-Whitney, a San
Francisco-based publisher of legal information (and a division of
Thomson Legal Publishing, Inc.), today announced that it will
acquire Barclays Law Publishers of South San Francisco for an
undisclosed amount of cash. The publisher of Barclays Official
California Code of Regulations, Barclays also publishes official
administrative codes for other states, including Illinois and North
Carolina. In addition, they publish official decisions of the
Ninth, Third, and Fourth Circuits of the United States Court of
Appeals.
Bancroft-Whitney, which has been in operation in California
continuously since 1856, is the official publisher of the California
Supreme and Appellate Court opinions. The company is also the
exclusive publisher of B.E. Witkin's highly respected California
legal treatises, Deering's California Codes, Miller & Starr
California Real Estate 2d, and LawDeskO, California's best-selling
CD-ROM legal research system.
Commenting on the acquisition, Harry Blake, CEO of
Bancroft-Whitney said, "By combining the resources of
Bancroft-Whitney, a company that has served the California legal
community for the past 140 years, with those of Barclays, the
state's fastest growing and most innovative legal publisher, we will
be uniquely positioned to meet the future legal information needs of
California's legal and business professionals. Using Barclays'
innovative database publishing techniques, we will soon be able to
offer the market new customized publications containing California
cases, statutes, and regulations."
Barclays' CEO, Mike James, will assume an executive position at Thomson
Legal Publishing, Inc., where he and several Barclays' employees will
concentrate on expanding Thomson's position in administrative law publishing in
states outside of California. James said, "The Bancroft-Whitney and Barclays
synergy is a natural. The California legal community can expect innovative new
products and services that weren't before possible."
Barclays' 57 employees will continue to work in South San Francisco.

Does anyone know what is going on with Barclays Law Publishers out of San
Francisco? They came into Ilinois to sell a new version of the Illinois
Administrative Code in the last year. Calling there today, I learned
that sales rep Mike Reynolds, VP Clark Wigley, and Operations Director
Sue Stapleton are no longer with the company. What alerted me was their
mailing to sell the Master Index of the _Illinois Administrative Code_
despite the fact that our order included this index at no additional
charge. Are they going through changes? Have they been taken over?
