Re: training on non-Lexis/Westlaw databases

At CWRU we train the students on DIALOG (direct access) as well
as through WESTLAW, QL (the Canadian online service) and depending
on the interests of the students for that semester NEWSNET,
VUTEXT, DATATIMES, PHINET, ELSS, Hannah (legislative service for
Ohio, Michigan, Illinois), and anything else that seems
appropriate. We talk about other databases as well (e.g.
Washington Alert, Current USC) and we encourage them to use
the CD ROM versions of things like Congressional Masterfile,
the Wilson indexes, the Information Access Co. indexes, etc.
We also mention very specialized databases as the subject comes up
but find that the students suffer information overload pretty
quickly (as do we all!) so try to organize the information by
subject in the printed handouts that we give them. Hope this
is of interest to you.
