To Penny Hazelton, Barbara Bintliff and others who wonder
why the ABA can't use the Annual Questionnaire to get the
information for the proposed consumer handbook. At this
point the only answer that readily comes to mind is that
the greater amount of the information they seek (other
than library information) is not now reported in the
questionnaire. I suspect they thought since the library
information was so available to us that we could repeat
the answers to these few questions. As yet no one has
expressed concern for the continuing emphasis on volume
counts or the lack of any information that expresses
current levels of library support. With regard to the
questions concerning standards for number of copies]
of particular books or sets held by the library, Notre
Dame subscribes to its varient of the "seattle rule",
ie the number we use and the cost. It might be noted
that in the advent of 20% reduction in purchasing
power this year and next we have eliminated our
second set of the National Reporter and since Jan
1, about $32,000 in serial expenses. Thank you to all of you who
have responded so far to my request for comments. I urge
you to seek out the entire text of the proposed new
standard from your dean. rjacobs@irish.mvs.
