photocopy reprints

Hello, this is in response to the request by Lee Warthen for information
regarding experience with preservation photocopy vendors. Here at Georgetown
University Law Library, we have begun a program of replacing our brittle
books with preservation photocopies if they are not available in print. We
have sent approximately 32 books to the University of Minnesota Bindery and
have generally been pleased with the product. The bindings are very
attractive and sturdy. They use a nice grade of acid-free paper and provide
a wide inner margin. Some of the books had very dark, discolored pages.
They did have some difficulty adjusting the contrast in order that the type
was sufficiently dark without picking up the dark background. Occassionally,
a dark border was left around edges of the page. I was told that the
machines they were using did not have "masking" capability and this made it
difficult to completely avoid the problem of the dark borders. I am
currently considering other companies, at least for the items I suspect may
be troublsome. I have heard many good things about Booklab and have seen
some of their work. The item I saw had a fold-out color map and it was very
well done. I hope this information has been somewhat helpfull.
