The amount we charge for reprocessing has to do with the politics of
raising too many charges at once. I inherited a system where all the
charges were way too low, and I couldn't raise them all at once.
I generally raise one or two charge
items each year. We don't reprocess many lost items so that one is last
on my list. In recent years I have raised photocopy charges, fax charges
reference service charges, online charges, legal research service charges
and added a substantial fee that all students pay for the library when
they pay tuition. In addition I added a $10 per month late charge that
applies to everything due not paid within 30 days and it cumulates. All of
these are a lot more visible and generate a lot more money. This year
I will probably get around to raising lost book charges and fines.
Then I will start over reevaluating how much costs have gone up in the
other areas since I last raised the costs.
