ATTENTION ALL DEPOSITORY LAW LIBRARIANS!
By now, you should have all read about and/or received the letter from
the Superintendent of Documents dated November 18 identifying a $3.5
million GPO budgetary shortfall and announcing a "package of reductions"
designed to meet these budget cuts. The Government Relations Committee of
the American Association of Law Libraries has reviewed this letter and the
accompanying surveys. We are deeply alarmed at the level and nature of the
cuts, and we are concerned that they are being implemented so hastily.
We must try to slow down the cutback process until a more reasonable
plan can be developed and/or alternate sources of funding can be explored.
You can help by calling your Senators and Representatives and requesting
that they contact Senator Wendell Ford and Representative Charlie Rose,
incoming and outgoing Chairs of the Joint committee on Printing. Ask them
to urge Ford and Rose to see that no cuts are finalized until they are
reviewed by Congress in its next session. Stress how severely the American
public's right to know will be harmed if these cuts are imposed without
exploring alternative measures.
Time is of the essence here; we urge you to make this your top
priority. If we who are the guardians of these materials do not act, we
will be the first to experience the fallout. Pick up your phone now. If
you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
