I had my annual meeting with my rep last month. My new rep assured me
that the new plan would be just as cheap as the every other year plan
because Bender had been jacking up the new prices to offset the discounts.
But my calculations say that just isn't so. When we first went to the
every other year plan, we were spending a little less than $40,000 a
year. In the every other year plan, we started out at about $11,000 a
year and slowly rose to around $14,000 a year. And we kept most of our
original titles. When we got through with adding up the prepaid annual
pricing prices for just the half of our collection due for repurchase
this year, the price exceeded $20,000. We cut a few titles and got it
down to about $18,000, but the prepaid annual pricing still exceeds what
we paid for new titles every other year by quite a bit. We simply can't
afford to put everything back on continuous updating even with prepaid
fixed annual pricing. My rep promised that bundling of titles in like
subject areas would help, but the figures listed above included bundling.
We will probably have to continue some alternative form of updating such
as buying maxfills every other year.
