This workshop is designed to provide librarians with an overview of the
current status of the U.S. copyright law and its impact on library
services. Emphasis is on the copyright status of print, audiovisual and
electronic information as well as computer programs. Participants will
focus on copyright law basics and learn to evaluate potential uses of
copyrighted works in libraries and to apply considerations for formulating
institutional policies. Specific provisions of the U.S. Copyright Act and
the Congressional and ALA guidelines will be reviewed, as well as recent
court decisions relating to infringement, fair use and reproduction of
copyrighted works in libraries in both the nonprofit and for-profit
sectors, and in educational institutions. (.6 CEUs)
