Re: Networking cd's
....anymore, networking compact disks is fairy easy...it is not
just for "propeller heads". Anybody can do it. Really. Try it.
If I can, anybody can.
Besides..on many of the current network operating systems
(Lantastic), you don't have to do anything special to set one
up....Our network has approx. 70 stations and we are adding another
50 soon....performance is fine.....you don't have to buy anything
additional...Now-a-days, lantastic goes happily up to 400 (with
bridges and such)
...Sorry...I could not resist this discussion......I hate the "look
how good we done it" kind of exchanges too.....but it is just that
cd's are pretty basic network stuff now...Had to throw in my 2
cents..
I can't imagine having to wander the library looking for a single
user cd station. Great exercise I expect....Must be why I am
getting fat.....
Our approach (I must admit some obsessive overkill) is to network
everything (either with special permission with the vender or using
the network version)....Even in the early days, vendors were always
supportive of letting us try to network their product and then give
them feedback- then they can sell a network version....
Anyway, the theory is that by networking everything, the
application can be used on any work-station (even the west compact
disk stuff).....
The only real problem is that since we use Windows as our "front
end", there are only 26 logical drive assignments available
(assuming you want multi-tasking)...We had to sacrifice some
applications being able to run at the same time as others (in
discrete windows) on the work-station...
...I believe that the challenge we face is to set up a cd network
across internet (tcp/ip)...so far, we have managed to "hang one"
across internet- on WASHLAW (though we did a bad job of it I
admit....it tends to hang-up.....And I expect our users might like
to hang me when they get stuck......but)
....well....enough.....again.... sorry for the "how good we done
it" sound of my comments....
...I just think that folks need to "dive in" to networking their
cds........This is just the "home work" we will all need to do
FIRST------ if we really want to use the future "electronic
highway".
