Dear LAW-LIBers,
For those of you who are recent subscribers to LAW-LIB, I thought I'd post
information about some other lists you might find useful to subscribe to.
Most of them are BITNET listserv lists using Eric Thomas software. To
subscribe to them, send the following message to the LISTSERV@nodeid:
subscribe listname Your Name. So for example, if Patrick Stewart wanted to
subscribe to INT-LAW@UMINN1, he'd send the following message to
LISTSERV@UMINN1: subscribe INT-LAW Patrick Stewart.
-----------------
HELP-NET@TEMPLEVM (this list is good for beginning users of the Internet,
but anyone can belong as helpful information is provided; can ask questions
on how to send e-mail, FTP, find lists of lists, read Usenet news, etc.
anything related to BITNET/Internet);
NETTRAIN@UBVM (this is for people who train others on how to use
BITNET/Internet; not for beginning questions, but you can "lurk"
there/subscribe, read messages, but don't post questions, as has very useful
information);
PACS-L@UHUPVM1 (list for anything related to "public access computer systems"
such as Gopher, online catalogs, e-mail lists, etc., anything systems used by
patrons in libraries; great for catching hot Internet news, general computer
info, plus the monthly Internet Hunt, list of books, articles, conferences,
products, etc. related to the Internet; 7022 subscribers from 56 countries);
And for specialized library areas:
INT-LAW@UMINN1 (list for discussions, questions, announcements related to
foreign, comparative and international legal resources; postings re GATT, EC,
NAFTA, international environmental documents, UN resolutions, foreign
constitutions, securities laws, etc.; regular posting of News of
International Legal Publications, News of Electronic Resources, Law Abroad,
advanced tables of contents of _International Legal Materials_ & _American
Journal of International Law_, new lists & gophers; 490 subscribers
from 27 countries);
EURO-LEX@DEARN (list for information exchange on European & European
Community law; postings on European Documentation Centers, European Community
databases such as CELEX & SCAD, sources of laws for the various European
countries; 160 subscribers from 25 countries);
GOVDOC-L@PSUVM (list for discussions, announcements, questions related to
government documents, primarily U.S. federal, with some state, foreign, &
international; 1617 subscribers from 18 countries);
(there's a special list for members of the AALL Government Documents
SIS, but it hasn't been that active: GOVDOCS@cica.cica.indiana.edu)
A non-BITNET list (like GOVDOCS) for law school computing personnel is
TEKNOIDS@fatty.law.cornell.edu. A lot of the discussion is technical,
but very useful, and subscribers are very helpful and quick at
answering each other's questions.
There are other lists for collection development, interlibrary loan
(ILL-L@UVMVV), reference (LIBREF-L@KENTVM), for substantive law (such
as FEMJUR@SUVM, LAWPROF@chicagokent.kentlaw.edu, LAWSCH-L@AUVM, and
CNI-COPYRIGHT@CNI.ORG), etc. You can identify them by telnetting to
various law gophers: Washington & Lee, Cornell, Washburn, SLU,
etc..., or asking your computer services staff for help.
Hope this helps!
Aloha!
Lyo.
