The Boston College Law Library is seeking a Legal Reference
Librarian/Technology Instructor for which a job description follows. We
think this is an exciting time to be in Boston in general and at BC in
particular. The Law School is located on Boston College's Newton campus,
one-and-one-half miles from the main campus in Chestnut Hill, just
minutes from downtown Boston and the friendly confines of Fenway Park.
We have a new dean, Avi Soifer, who has arrived with new ideas and much
enthusiasm. Like our previous dean, he is a supporter of library
services in both their traditional and their more modern varieties. We
are also in the midst of planning for a new library building,
construction of which is scheduled to begin in June of 1994 with
occupancy planned for second semester of the 1995/1996 academic year. We
have recently hired a Computer Services Administrator with both legal
and computer education and experience to operate our local area network
and manage our hardware and software resources. We are working with the
Legal Research and Writing faculty to expand services to our users
through the development of research and writing opportunities throughout
the law school curriculum where librarians serve as Instructors in Legal
Research. More broadly we are participating with all the academic law
libraries in New England in a strategic planning process of the New
England Law Library Consortium that we hope will develop innovative
methods for resource sharing for the future.
We are eager to receive applications from creative, energetic members of
the profession who would like to be part of this effort. As the job
description explains, this position has a special first year assignment
of insuring that all members of our staff are sufficiently familiar with
modern technologies and electronic information sources to insure good
service to our users. Superior technical expertise is not required.
Instead, we seek persons fearless in the face the new electronic age who
are eager to venture onto the electronic highways and byways, who are
willing to examine and evaluate new sources of information, and who are
enthusiastic about sharing their developing knowledge and expertise with
others.
Please share this description with anyone who you think might be
interested in such a position.
Thanks.

BOSTON COLLEGE LAW LIBRARY
LEGAL REFERENCE LIBRARIAN/TECHNOLOGY INSTRUCTOR
DUTIES: The legal reference position advertised here is a permanent
position in the Boston College Law Library with a special assignment for
its first year. During the first year the librarian will participate
with other members of the professional staff in providing reference and
instructional services to students, faculty and staff in the library and
in the classroom and in planning for a new library to be built in
1994/95. However, the primary responsibility will be the development and
implementation of a program to bring all members of the library staff to
a basic level of computing and communications competence. The librarian
will work with others to identify minimum skills needed by all library
staff, will assess individual training needs, will develop and deliver
programs of instruction and/or identify others to provide instruction,
and will develop mechanisms for insuring continuing education for all
staff in these areas. Instruction will focus not only on the use of
hardware and software but also on the content and evaluation of legal
and law-related databases. The librarian will be assisted in these
efforts by the Director to whom the position will report for the initial
year, the Computer Services Administrator, and other members of the
library staff.
The successful candidate for this position need not be a "techie" but
should be thoroughly comfortable with computers and communications and
enthusiastic about developing that expertise to improve the delivery of
legal information within a law school community.
REQUIREMENTS: M.L.S. and J.D. from accredited institutions; work
experience in libraries or in the practice of law; knowledge of legal
bibliography; demonstrated competence in the use of computers and
communications preferably in both Macintosh and Windows/DOS
environments. In particular, comfort with word processing;
LEXIS/WESTLAW; the INTERNET; integrated library systems, ideally NOTIS;
and local and wide area networks. Candidates should also have an
interest in curricular development and instruction; sound writing
ability and strong interpersonal skills. Candidate will enjoy the
special first year assignment more if he/she also has patience, an
optimistic attitude, and enthusiasm for embracing the challenges of an
evolving profession in a time of major technological change.
SALARY: Competitive. Generous fringe benefits including research funding
and the opportunity for research leaves. Please submit a resume and
letter of application with salary requirements and the names of three
references to: Bonnie Newton, Personnel Officer, Department of Human
Resources, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA 02167. Priority will be
given to applications received by October 15, 1993. Boston College is an
Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
