We have a patron who is need of information on "African
Courts"... apparently extra-legal courts set up by early
African-Americans to handle their own problems outside the
established court system. We found some info in Higginbotham's
"In the Matter of Color" about "Negro Courts" in Pennsylvania,
but these were established by law, and were staffed by government
employees. (By the way, does anyone know what became of
subsequent volumes of Higginbotham's work? Apparently it was
intended as a multi-volume work, but we can only find evidence of
a single volume in the bibliographic records.) Any information
or leads would be appreciated.
