In case you haven't noticed the August 1993 release to "Moores Federal
Practice" costs $929.20!
Are they now sending gilded press binders?
Are they billing us in Turkish Lira?
What could possibly justify a quarterly supplement of this price?
The supplement itself is not unusually large. It contains the usual bulk
of filler and blank pages. The publication updates indicate that they
revised a total of 5 chapters and included "recent cases." Even if these
are substantial revisions that's still $200 a chapter! (I didn't see any
cases more reecent than 1992 and there were only a handful of those.)
For all their posturing about reforming their pricing structure at the AALL
meeting in Boston, they appear to be shamelessly gouging their
customers who have not yet converted to their "new pricing" option.
This can only make one wonder how much more tenuous the relationship
between price and value will become once the humble shrink-wrapped bundles
are no longer shipped with their embarrassing price tags attached.
Maybe it's time for ann FTC regulation which requires meaningful
disclosure regarding the substantive content of these supplements.
What percentage of the text is new information?
What percentage is corrections in punctuation and other editorial
error?
How many new statutes and cases are cited?
What is the date of the most recent case or statute cited?
Maybe I'm missing something but if you see $900 of value in the August
supplement to Moores, let me know where it is.
