If you will look at 8 Opinions of the Attorney General, p. 269, you will
find Cushing's (the Janet Reno of his day) rejection of Morton's claim for
gov't compensation for his ether discovery. If you are interested in how
he fared in trying to get a patent for his invention, see Morton v. New
York Eye Infirmary (1862), 5 Blatch 116; 2 Fisher 329.
