Dear INT-LAWers, LAW-LIBers, & EURO-LEXers,
Here's the September Rick Gates Internet Hunt. It's for beginners so I urge
y'all to try it. Have fun! Lyo.
----------------------------------
P.S. He will post the answers on several lists including LIBREF-L@KENTVM,
PACS-L@UHUPVM1, and NETTRAIN@UBVM (all BITNET listserv lists), plus there are
Internet sites that "house" the answers to the Internet Hunt.

As advertised, here is the Hunt for September... a beginner's Hunt.
There is no question worth more than 3 points. They're all pretty
easy. As usual, the extra credit question requires a little extra
work. But if you're fairly new to the Internet, you should be able to
answer most of these.
HINTS
-----
Since this is a beginner's Hunt, I feel justified in starting you off
with a few pointers...
1. Gopher has become so prevalent on the Nets that you should be able
to get started on most of these with the wide-ranging rodent.
Veronica (started at the Univ. of Nevada at Reno), is a logical first
place to look. Some of the more popular all-purpose Gophers used by
Hunt players are the InfoSlug at U Cal. Santa Cruz, the Washington &
Lee Gopher, the University of Michigan Library, the Internic Gopher
and, of course Mother Gopher at the Univ. of Minnesota.
2. There are some good general guides to the Internet. The two I use
the most are the Yanoff list and the December list. The players use
these and also Hytelnet. Veronica can get you all of them.
3. Only experience in the Nets can ultimately lead you to say things
like Adolf Hildebrand did last month... "The best 'one stop' source
for online job listings I found is the University of Texas Gopher".
So perseverence and a willingness to explore are your best tools.
Please feel free to send me any comments or questions you might have.
My standard .sig is below. Now on to the regular business.
THE RULES
---------
1. There are a total of 12 questions. The first 11 questions all
count toward your score. I have personally verified that each of
these can be answered using only the resources of the Net. These are
contrived questions.
2. The last question is the mystery question. I don't know if there's
an answer to this on the Net. I may or may not have tried to find
one. These questions usually come to me from people asking for
information. This is a real question.
3. Each of these first 11 questions carries a value in parentheses.
This point value is my best guess on how tough that question is to
answer. The scale is 1 (easy), to 10 (hard). Total points for all
questions is listed after the last question.
4. Answer as many questions as you can. Partial credit is awarded.
5. Teams are allowed to submit entries. These must be designated as
such. Pick a team name. Team entries will be scored separately from
individual entries.
6. All answers must be mailed to me. My standard signature will
be at the bottom of this message.
7. The contest will run for one week from the date of posting of this
message. The deadline should appear in the header at the top of this
message.
8. Feel free to send me potential question for the Hunt, be they
scored, or mystery.
9. Have fun! What's it all for, after all?
SCORING
-------
1. Whoever answers all the questions first shall be declared the
winner.
2. In the event that nobody answers all the questions, the player
with the highest point total shall be declared the winner.
3. If there is a tie for highest point total, the player who
responded first shall be declared the winner.
4. Assume you're answering the question for someone who understands
the basic network tools (ftp, telnet, finger, gopher, etc.), but just
doesn't know where the data is. Answers like:
ftp host.university.edu
...will not score as high as:
anonymous ftp to host.university.edu
cd /pub/documents
file is called important.txt.Z
Don't feel like you have to tell someone how to use ftp. Instead,
tell them where they can find what they're looking for, what tool to
use to find it, and if necessary, the end information itself.
5. It's always a good idea to let us know how you decided where to
begin looking. After all, we can't have everyone thinking that you're
all geniuses with innate Net-knowledge! :-)
6. Read the question carefully. If it's asking for specific
information (like "What is the chorus to Jingle Bells?"), then supply
that info in your answer. Sometimes you may find a pointer to a
source that no longer exists. Providing the end information tells me
that you actually checked the source out.
7. If any player would like an individually scored entry, please feel
free to send me a message. I will send them out after the Hunt has
closed.
THE HUNT
--------
1. (2) Wow! This Hunt stuff is fantastic! ;-) Who was the winner
of the first Internet Hunt?
2. (2) It's not much longer before Hong Kong reverts to Chinese rule.
Where can I find some current discussions about Hong Kong?
3. (3) How do I find the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) file for the
Usenet group alt.internet.services? It's not showing up on my
newsreader for that group.
4. (3) I'm studying international economics. How many German Marks
can I get for 5 dollars?
5. (2) What's the definition of the word acme?
6. (3) How many libraries at Harvard University have a copy of the
book "Preparing for the Twenty First Century", by Paul Kennedy?
7. (2) What percentage of the population of Bosnia-Herzegovina was
Muslim, Serb, and Croat before 1992?
8. (3) Who were some of the cast of the late 70s English situation
comedy, "Fawlty Towers"?
9. (2) What does a '+' mean in the file inet.services.txt?
10. (2) How much does it cost to join the fencing club at the
University of Tasmania?
Extra Credit. (1) The National Science Foundation provides the high-speed
backbone network that ties together many of the Nets in the U.S.A. and
provides links to other countries. How many bytes traversed the
NSFNet backbone in July of this year?
Mystery Questions: I came across this one while working on question
number 10. I suspect that I was just burning a little midnight oil,
and thus missed something very simple. So tell me, "In what city is
the University of Tasmania located?"
