I have never known fiche to "scratch" each other, but depending on the
climate in your building, I have known them to stick together - sometimes
to the point of having the equivalent of having veritable bricks in the
file drawers. A slight bending motion frees them from their neighbors,
but I can't help but think that there might be long term effects. We have
done as you have, leave sleeves on if they have them, and not if they
don't. I have also found that usually reputable publishers provide sleeves
if the thickness of the fiche is thinner, e.g. CIS fiche is thick; or if
there is a set of fiche to one item, e.g. most suppliers of Supreme Court
Records and Briefs. I'd leave the sleeves in, the space saved may not be
worth the time spent to remove them, and the hassles of pulling the desired
pieces from the cabinet.
