Microfiche Storage

We are attempting to stretch our Microfiche storage capabilities. Many
of our fiche arrive in paper sleeves/jackets (either one per fiche or
one per set), while others arrive without any protective jacket/sleeve.
Those that arrive with the jacket are filed with the jacket, while
those that arrive without a jacket are filed as is. The number of
fiche one can file per inch is considerably more when not using the
jacket/sleeve.

There are times, of course, when the jacket is needed to serve as a
background for reading the fiche header information. On the other
hand, many fiche (especially those produced by companies like CIS and
Hein) have a colored header and thus are readable without the
jacket.

QUESTION: Can we remove the jackets/sleeves from those fiche that do
not require the jacket/sleeve for purposes of identification?

My concern is that if fiche are filed without protective jackets, the
fiche will scratch each other.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.
