Last summer a student employee questioned the pay scale for student
assistants. She felt that other institutions pay their research assistants
a higher rate. Our pay scale per hr for student assistants for academic year 1994-95
is as follows: Basic $ 5.70, Intermediate $6.10 and Skilled $6.60. The
skilled rate is usually reserved for research assistants, computer lab
student assistants and student supervisors who have experience, and work the circulation desk two
nights a week and opening up on Saturday/Sunday. These time slots do not
have a full time staff person not on duty.
During the summer the pay rates do not change and research assistants are
paid the skilled rate. The rates are increased at the beginning of each
academic year and remain the same through out the year. Someone can go from
the basic to the intermediate if their immediate supervisor requests it. The
ceiling rate is $6.60.
I would be interested what the pay scale is for student assistants in other
libraries. I will send responses to any/all who are interested.
