OK, we're clearly not going to settle this issue - so this is a plea to cut
the thread.
Those who have been helped feel like they ought to say thank you. Those who
have helped feel good seeing themselves stroked in public. And in an era of
incivility I think we should encourage both things.
But it doesn't matter what I think, or what those who don't want to read
thank you notes think, because people are clearly going to keep doing it
anyway. So let's stop adding even more to the clutter by talking about it.
Let me reiterate somebody's excellent compromise suggestion: make sure you
include "thank you" in the subject field. Then those who don't want to read
them can take out their frustration on the delete key.
