DIRECTOR OF LAW LIBRARY
CALIFORNIA WESTERN SCHOOL OF LAW
With the retirement of its current Director, Dr. Chin Kim, on July 31,
1995, California Western School of Law now seeks applications and
nominations for the position of Director of the Law Library. The
Director reports directly to the Dean and is responsible for all aspects
of Library operation.
Plans are commencing for the renovation of our current library, in which
the new Director will also play a key role through the construction
process. Other duties include negotiation and management of the library
budget, space concerning library collection acquisitions, cataloging and
organization of materials, technological retrieval techniques, public
service, support for faculty research and management of the library staff.
Candidates must have MLS and JD degrees from accredited schools. They
should have substantial experience at an academic law library,
familiarity with library management processes and new legal information
sources, a commitment to scholarship, and strong communication
abilities. Experience in teaching is welcome. The candidate we seek
must be oriented toward service to the faculty and students and be a
creative leader.
The Library has a collection of more than 220,000 volumes and volume
equivalents, with a professional staff of eight (including the Director),
plus five additional full-time library paraprofessionals and sixteen part
time library assistants. It accesses OCLC, and subscribes to
Westlaw/Dialog, Lexis/Nexis, Interactive videos and LegalTrac.
Installation of INNOPAC, the integrated library automation system, is
scheduled for early November, 1994.
California Western School of Law is a private, not-for-profit independent
law school founded seventy years ago. The school gained accreditation
from the ABA in 1962 and the AALS in 1967; it now has over 5,000 alumni
practicing in all fifty states and eighteen countries. Current enrollment
is about 800 students, all of whom are enrolled in a full-time, day-only
program.
Inquiries can be made, and applications sent, to Professor Thomas D.
Barton, Chair, Appointments committee, California Western School of Law,
225 Cedar Street, San Diego, California 92101. Applications should
include a resume and the names of professional references. We seek
initial interviews of candidates in Chicago at the November AALS
Recruitment Convention. We also will interview in New Orleans at the
January AALS Annual Convention. California Western is an equal
opportunity employer and especially encourages application from women and
