The Center for Electronic Text in the Law at the University of Cincinnati
College of Law is considering sponsoring a 2 or 3 day workshop next
summer in Cleveland immediately prior to the AALL meeting in Pittsburgh
that would be entitled Collecting Electronic Documents -- SGML
Applications for Law Libraries.
The workshop would have a limited enrollment (10-15) and would cover
areas including the following:
Creation of Electronic Texts:
- a general introduction to SGML
- an overview of the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines (with special
reference to the problems of encoding legal texts)
- demonstrations and hands-on time in using various SGML authoring and
parsing tools
- cataloging and other similar library issues with respect to electronic
documents,
Distribution of Electronic Texts:
- storage and retrieval issues, including SGML-aware databases
- conversion from SGML to other formats (Folio Views, HTML, etc.)
Uses of Electronic Texts:
- electronic documents in faculty and student research
The instructors for this workshop will consist of individuals, both
inside and outside the law library community, who have significant
experience in their subject areas.
There would be a modest charge for the workshop as well as for room and
board. Before we begin concrete preparations for this workshop, we would
like to hear the level of current interest. If you or your institution
might be interested in attending a workshop of this kind, please reply
directly to the Center for Electronic Text in the Law at cetl@law.uc.edu.
Thank you very much.
