Subject: FORM Virus on ABA disks

Thanks, BLOCK, for the warning about the [FORM] virus found on the ABA
disks. I too found it on 3 of the 7 3.5" diskettes (Part I - General;
Part V - Profile; Part VI - Financial Info).

The executive assistant to the Dean brought me a memo from ABA after I
checked the disks. In paragraph 2, it states,

"I would like to address two issues related to this year's questionnaire.
First, there have been isolated cases reported of a virus residing on a
diskette(s). At this point, it's unclear how many diskettes are involved.
If you have an antivirus utility such as Norton Antivirus, it will detect
such an infection and subsequently purge the virus. Given the quantity of
diskettes used in this survey, it is very difficult to check each one
prior to being sent out. However, I will attempt to take further measures
of quality control in future mailings."

This seems extremely irresponsible to me. This warning (if it can be
called that) is so innocuous, the secretary didn't think to bring me this
memo. There are no instructions for examining and disinfecting the disks.
Nothing about what to do if you don't have an antivirus program. What,
"Oh just disregard this message if you don't understand it, there have
only been isolated cases anyway."

Who's in charge here?
