As Hazel Johnson begins her reign as PR Czarina, it seems
appropriate to recognize and thank Frank Houdek for his work in creating
the role of PR Czar.
It was not long ago that AALL had very little public relations
presence to speak of, largely because there was no committee or individual
charged with making something happen, and Headquarters staff had to fit PR
in among dozens of conflicting demands and duties. When Penny Hazelton
was president of AALL, she appointed a special committee to examine the
association's PR activities and to make recommendations for the future.
Frank served on that committee, doing the lion's share of drafting the
final report, which recommended a budget for PR (the first ever) and a
volunteer Public Relations Coordinator (which he dubbed the "PR Czar").
Later, he accepted Mark Estes' appointment to become the first Public
Relations Coordinator.
During his tenure, Frank accomplished a great deal. Through his
column in the AALL Newsletter and his regular postings on law-lib, many of
us are more aware of public relations and opportunities to improve our
public's awareness of our profession. He has generated a lot of ideas --
and shared the ideas of AALL members around the country. And it's thanks
to Frank that we've had AALL post-its, buttons, tip cards, and
highlighters.
Thanks, Frank!
And best wishes to Hazel Johnson for continued public relations
successes!
