Folks:
We are struggling with budget issues, and the question has come up
about proper staff levels for shelving and looseleafing. How do other
law libraries out there staff for these chores? I am interested in how
many hours/week, part-time, student, full-time, and whether your loose-
leafers watch the circ desk or do other duties while looseleafing. I
appreciate any feedback I can get. You may reply directly to me and I
will summarize for the list.
Speaking of such promises, I asked some months ago about academic
libraries that charge outside paralegal schools for access/services. I
only got one useful response, which was a bit disappointing. The one
reply noted the difficulty of enforcing the charge when a library is
open to the public. I appreciated the reply, and have proposed to our
dean that we try any way, with a flat fee of $50/academic year. The
school would be given explanatory tours (here how this digest works, for
example) and reference assistance for the students. No circulation, ILL
or (of course) CALR privileges. We'll see.
So, my current question:
1. How many hours/week do you schedule for
a. shelving
b. Looseleafing
2. Break out each into Part-time, Full-time, Student
3. Do your looseleafers do other duties while 'leafing?
4. How large is your library/law school?
5. Does this keep up with the work?
Thank you,
