This is in response to John Peele's request of September 30 for "the
names of recognized / classic general treatises on 'International
Law'. The request posed a challenge, both because Peele did not
specify which "classic general International Law" he meant -- public,
private, historical, current topical, etc. -- and because he cautions
verbose lawyers and librarians, "Please restrict to one or two names".
"Brownlie (1990)" and "Brierly", in what follows, Mr. Peele.
I was tempted, nevertheless, to be verbose and try a longer list. If
others please would comment on the attached: this is meant to be a
short grouping -- chosen for their fame, topicality, or currency, from
among thousands of possibilities -- of English-language works
indispensable to a study of the study of international law. Suggestions
of significant omissions would be appreciated.
