At SUNY Buffalo, we were concerned about two aspects of vendor training.
First, in our experience, both the academic reps and the student reps have
varied considerably in their expertise and teaching skills. Second, the
"pitch" was always part of their training approach. We felt that there
needed to be an objective discussion of CALR in general and of both the
common and unique features of each database first and THEN hands-on
training on one database at a time. Therefore, we have always done the
group training for the first year students and offered small group
refreshers for the 2nd and 3rd year students. We use the academic reps to
give us (the librarians) updates and refreshers and use the student reps to
supplement the reference librarians in one-on-one help in the in-library
labs. (They are located right behind the Reference Desk.) The student
reps are in charge of student passwords and advising on software
installation and the like. They are supposed to keep the labs tidy and
keep track of supplies. We have had good luck in inviting area Commercial
Reps to give specialty sessions on tax and various commercial subject
