1994 CALI Law School Computing Survey - LAST REQUEST

From: CALI MAIL (calimail@kentlaw.edu)
Date: 11/27/94

This has been cross-posted to LAW-LIB and TEKNOIDS. I apologize for any
duplications.

We're stuffing envelopes as I write this. These will be mailed on
Wednesday, November 30. If you have already ftped the survey from
cali.kentlaw.edu (and emailed me) or sent me a message telling me who to
mail the survey diskette to, you can ignore this message.

If you are planning to ftp the survey, let me know. If you prefer to
work from the diskette, please let me know who to send the diskette to in
your institution. Do not assume that I know. I really appreciate your
assistance with this project. In case you did not receive the original
message, I have included it at the end of this message.

Here is a mini-FAQ for the survey...

1q. Can I get the survey on paper? There are several different people who
will be answering the questions in the survey.

1a. At present, there is no paper version of the survey. The goal is to
work towards a totally electronic survey so that turn-around time on data
collection and processing is minimized. You can pass the diskette around
and have different people answer the questions. Future version
possibilities are WWW, all-email/structured email or some kind of
semi-permanent setup on the CALI internet server where institutions can
update the information at any time - sort of survey continuum!

2q. When is the survey due back to CALI?

2a. Well, I was hoping to present some initial results at the CALI
Member's Luncheon so I would appreciate if you could return the diskette
or email the SURVEY.TXT file by December 31, 1994.

3q. Can I print out the results of the survey for my own records?

3a. This is a great idea, that I didn't think of until after the survey
was distributed (another way of saying no, or it will be in the next
version upgrade). You can go through the survey and tap the PrintScreen
key - it's kludgy, but it works.

4q. When will the results be available?

4a. I hope to have a 'formal' write-up finished by the end of the
January, but that depends on the survey response from non-Internet folks.

5q. Why didn't you ask <insert question here> or the survey doesn't cover
<insert your topic here> very well.

5a. The survey specifically skipped some areas for purposes of brevity
and I am working on making the survey a lot more user-friendly (more
popup pick boxes instead of fill-in 'X', etc.) I would love to hear any
and all suggestions for improving the survey.

Here's the original post. Thanks!

THE CALI 1994 LAW SCHOOL COMPUTING SURVEY

CALI is conducting a survey of ALL law schools regarding their computer
systems, staffing and services. Information from individual schools will
be kept confidential and the aggregate results will be distributed to all
participating law schools.

The information gathered will assist CALI in planning new projects,
services and software to serve its members and the legal education
community.

A unique feature of this survey is that it is ALL ELECTRONIC. The survey
is a program that runs on IBM/DOS compatible computers. (I apologize to
Macintosh users). The survey should be easier for you to answer and
easier for CALI to process. Your comments on whether this was true or not
are welcome.

HOW DO I GET THE SURVEY

There are TWO ways to get the survey. First, it is available from the
CALI ftp site at cali.kentlaw.edu. Login as 'anonymous' and use your email
address as the password. Change to the pub/surveys/school directory and
do a Binary GET LSCH94.EXE. Instructions for running the survey are
contained within this self-extracting file README.TXT. If you do obtain
the survey from our ftp site, please email me so that I do not also send
you a diskette with the survey program. Let me explain further.

The SECOND way to get the survey is for me to send it to you on a
diskette, but I need to know who the most appropriate person is to send
the survey to. Please drop me an email with the name and address of the
person who is most able to fill out a survey about computing operations
at your law school. I will send out the survey on diskette to every law
school except those who have picked it up from the ftp site (and told me
such) November 30, 1994.

Your participation is GREATLY appreciated. I want CALI to deliver
bigger, better and more effective services and software to its members
and you can assist me by filling out this survey. Further, you may be
able to use the aggregate survey data to justify projects or policies in
your law school.

If you have any questions, problems, comments, suggestions, let me know!
