This has been cross-posted to TEKNOIDS and LAW-LIB. I apologize for any
duplication.
THE CALI 1994 LAW SCHOOL COMPUTING SURVEY
CALI is conducting a survey of ALL law schools regarding their computer
systems, staffing and services. Information from individual schools will
be kept confidential and the aggregate results will be distributed to all
participating law schools.
The information gathered will assist CALI in planning new projects,
services and software to serve its members and the legal education
community.
A unique feature of this survey is that it is ALL ELECTRONIC. The survey
is a program that runs on IBM/DOS compatible computers. (I apologize to
Macintosh users). The survey should be easier for you to answer and
easier for CALI to process. Your comments on whether this was true or not
are welcome.
HOW DO I GET THE SURVEY
There are TWO ways to get the survey. First, it is available from the
CALI ftp site at cali.kentlaw.edu. Login as 'anonymous' and use your email
address as the password. Change to the pub/surveys/school directory and
do a BGET LSCH94.EXE. Instructions for running the survey are contained
within this self-extracting file AND at the end of this email message. If
you do obtain the survey from our ftp site, please email me so that I do
not also send you a diskette with the survey program. Let me explain
further.
The SECOND way to get the survey is for me to send it to you on a
diskette, but I need to know who the most appropriate person is to send
the survey to. Please drop me an email with the name and address of the
person who is most able to fill out a survey about computing operations
at your law school. I will send out the survey on diskette to every law
school except those who have picked it up from the ftp site (and told me
such) sometime next week.
Your participation is GREATLY appreciated. I want CALI to deliver
bigger, better and more effective services and software to its members
and you can assist me by filling out this survey. Further, you may be
able to use the aggregate survey data to justify projects or policies in
your law school.
If you have any questions, problems, comments, suggestions, let me know!

I have reproduced the README.TXT file below that comes with the survey to
provide you with complete information.

CENTER FOR COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEGAL INSTRUCTION
1994 CALI LAW SCHOOL COMPUTING SURVEY
Thanks for participating in the survey. The information you provide will
help CALI to produce and deliver better services and products for our
membership. Individual school information will be kept confidential.
I OBTAINED THE SURVEY FROM THE FTP SITE CALI.KENTLAW.EDU
If you obtained this survey from the ftp site at cali.kentlaw.edu, the
*FIRST* thing you should do is to email me. John Mayer
(JMAYER@KENTLAW.EDU) and tell me that you have obtained the survey from
the ftp site. I will *NOT* send out a diskette to any schools that get
the survey from the Internet in order to prevent confusion. This is
important, because one week after the survey is posted to the ftp site,
I will be mailing out diskettes to all of the schools I didn't hear
from.
INSTALLING THE SURVEY
To install the survey, make a new subdirectory and copy the file
LSCH94.EXE into that subdirectory. Next, type LSCH94.EXE and press
<enter> to expand the survey files. You are now ready to run the
survey.
RUNNING THE SURVEY
To run the survey, go to the subdirectory where the survey is installed
and type SURVEY and press <enter>. There is a command line parameter
for the survey that is very important. If you are going to run the
.EXE directly, type LSS94 //F:50 and press <enter>.
You can go through the survey from start to finish or quit at any time
and come back to answer specific questions. Most of the screens are
self-explanatory in regards to the types of answers desired. After a
few questions, it should be obvious what you are supposed to do.
WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THE SURVEY
When you have finished answering the questions in the survey, you have
two methods of getting the data back to us.
1 - Copy the entire contents of the survey subdirectory onto a diskette
and mail the diskette to:
John Mayer
CALI SURVEY
565 West Adams
Chicago, IL 60661
2 - Email the ASCII text file SURVEY.TXT (this file was created while
you were answering the survey questions) to CALIMAIL@KENTLAW.EDU.
Either way, hang on to the original survey data until I acknowledge
that I have successfully received your survey data. I will email or
call you within a couple of days.
I RECEIVED THE SURVEY IN THE MAIL ON A DISKETTE
If you received the survey on a diskette, you do not have to install it
on your hard disk. The survey can run completely from the floppy
diskette provided (albeit a bit slower).
RUNNING THE SURVEY
Put the diskette into the drive. Make that drive your default drive
and type SURVEY and press <enter>.
Put the diskette into the pre-addressed diskette mailer and send it
back to CALI. The address should already be on the envelope, but just
in case there was a glitch, the address is:
John Mayer
CALI SURVEY
565 West Adams
Chicago, IL 60661
Alternatively, you can email the ASCII text file SURVEY.TXT (this file
was created while you were answering the survey questions) to
CALIMAIL@KENTLAW.EDU. This file will be on the diskette.
If you choose to email the SURVEY.TXT file, hang on to the original
survey data until I acknowledge that I have successfully received your
survey data. I will email or call you within a couple of days.
RESULTS
After I compile the results, I will send out a report to all survey
respondents and you can compare your own answers with the accumulated
results from the other survey respondents. If you have any questions,
problems, comments, suggestions regarding the survey, don't hesitate to
contact me at (312) 906-5307 or at JMAYER@KENTLAW.EDU.
Thank you
John Mayer
