Summary-Shepards

Thanks to the 22 who responded to my inquiry about handling cancelled
subscriptions to Shepards. Because several asked me to summarize for the
list, here goes:

Of the 22, 14 were from law firms and 8 were academics or court libraries.

5 firms and 3 academics/courts simply tossed the books (with fair warning
and education for users) -- primarily because of space problems. Some
who threw away the books did keep the name citator volumes.

6 firms and 5 academics/courts kept the books and labeled them in some
variation of "CAUTION: Supplementation Discontinued". Almost everyone
who kept the books did throw away any supplementation. Some who kept the
books did so for the old cites that aren't on WL or Lexis.

1 firm had put the books in storage, but thought they would toss in 6
mos. if no one squawked.

2 firms had labeled the books and left on the shelf, but planned to move
to storage if no one squawked.

2 firms kept the books on the shelf but did not label them.

Miscellaneous notes: No one who had tossed the books expressed any
regret. Some were waiting to see how the Shepards CD-ROM product played
out before making a decision about keeping or tossing. Several people
provided attorneys and paralegals with cheat sheats on how to Shep online
(one Firm librarian even offered to do all the Shepardizing after the
books were tossed). Some have kept the books simply because they don't
want to have empty shelves.
