I'm pleased to announce the imminent publication of my book, "How to
Access the Government's Electronic Bulletin Boards," by Congressional
Quarterly Books.
Here's the deal: I'll briefly describe three of the most useful
federal bulletin boards. Then I'll include a quick plug for my book, along
with ordering information. If you just want the access details, feel
free to grab the telephone numbers and ignore the rest of the
message.

Internet: telnet fedworld.gov *or* http://www.fedworld.gov *or* ftp
ftp.fedworld.gov
FedWorld is a gateway to more than 120 BBSs operated by federal
government agencies and departments. FedWorld also has lots of useful
files, including White House documents and lists of federal job openings
nationwide. To save on long-distance charges, you can use telnet or the
World Wide Web to reach FedWorld and then access all the BBSs on its
gateway.
Consumer Information Center
Data: 202-208-7679
FedWorld gateway: 6
The Consumer Information Center offers dozens of publications
produced by federal agencies on such topics as choosing credit cards,
chronic fatigue syndrome, choosing a nursing home, helping your child do
better in school, buying a home, telemarketing fraud, preparing thrifty
meals, and staying healthy.
Labor News
Data: 202-219-4784
FedWorld gateway: 26
Labor News has economic data, the text of selected OSHA regulations,
information about the employment rights of people with disabilities,
descriptions of mining accidents, the text of the Family and Medical Leave
Act, and tons of other information about labor issues. User's manual:
MANUAL.BBS.
Here's the plug: The book has detailed descriptions of nearly 200
BBSs operated by federal agencies and departments, and includes Internet
addresses for those boards that have them. The boards offer everything
from White House documents to State Department travel advisories to
publications about how to start a small business. Accessing all the
boards is free (except in some cases for the cost of a long-distance
telephone call).
