I tried to post this to lawlibdir-l last week. I assume it didn't get
through because I have had no responses, and that is unusual for us.
Please excuse any duplication.

Subject: Academic Law Library Statistics
Now that most of the dust has settled surrounding this year's ABA
statistical questionnaire, I'd like to pursue some suggestions that were
made concerning the possibility of AALL's gathering of academic law
library statistics. (I'm wearing my Academic SIS chair hat here, since
the SIS is the obvious group to be involved in any statistics-gathering
project.)
Is there significant interest in gathering statistics on academic law
libraries in addition to (or as a supplement to) the ABA questionnaire?
If so, what kind of information would be useful to you as a director?
Certainly there are many areas in which comparative information would be
useful. For example, how are various library departments staffed? How
many people are involved in serials check-in and processing? Or how many
professionals are designated "reference librarians"? Or how many PCs are
in computing labs? We see these types of questions asked on
LAW-LIB all the time; how many of them would be of use to all of us?
I know that the logistics of developing, administering, and tabulating a
useful questionnaire are, shall we say, mammoth? Daunting? But I think
that many of us have wished for better, more responsive, more focused,
more _________ (you fill in the blank) information. We could do
ourselves a great service by seriously considering the question of
AALL-sponsored statistics.
Please let me know your thoughts. Should we consider collecting
statistics? If so, what types of information would be useful? If not,
why not?
