The following resolution was adopted by the American Association of Law
Libraries Executive Board on November 6, 1994.
Resolution of the
Executive Board of the
American Association of Law Libraries
WHEREAS new methods of information delivery are fundamentally
changing law libraries and the legal publishing industry, and
WHEREAS members of American society are developing a reasonable
expectation that the National Information Infrastructure (NII) will
provide a means of access to all types of information, including
government information, and
WHEREAS the NII is becoming a means by which legal information may
be made available to the public, and
WHEREAS the mission statement of the American Association of Law
Libraries (AALL) recognizes that the availability of legal
information to all people is a necessary requirement for a just and
democratic society, and
WHEREAS AALL's Government Information Policy states: "Federal,
state and local governments have a duty to disseminate government
information to their citizens. Government information should be
available to the public at no or low cost in both traditional and
electronic formats."
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the American Association of Law
Libraries supports
1. A system of citation that permits reference to legal
or law-related information in any medium, print or
electronic, without requiring reference to the
proprietary products of any particular publisher, and
2. Free or low cost public databases that provide access
to public domain legal and law-related information.
