We just the received the Westlaw letter also, and, subject ot our
library director's approval, have chosen the 6.000 line limit. It
is, of course, too early to know the student response. However, we have been discussing
limiting student printing with our Westlaw academic representative
for some time. Particularly since the installation of Westlaw and
Lexis's laser printers, which we were wise enough to insist had to be
maintained by the student representatives, Westlaw and Lexis printing
by students has become abusive. Student seem to print out their
entire search results indiscriminately. As Westlaw and Lexis have
increased their full-text coverage of legal periodicals the problem
has escalated almost geometrically, with student printing out several
full articles at a time. Since 6,000 lines per day is still more
than 100 pages, there is no reason that anyone making anything
resembling efficient use of the resource should not be able to live
with that limit.
