We also educate our students on the need to practice selective
printing. Unfortunately, the reality is that students routinely
ignore the teaching, because the "instant gratification" of printing
an entire case or article by simply selecting it from a menu or
pointing to it with a mouse click is too easy for them to resist,
(not to mention the fact that it saves them from having to pay for
copying or the "bother" of checking a book out of the library). The
result is that students leave the law school "addicted" to CALR
printing. In turn, this inevitably, and understandably, leads to
complaints from the legal community about the quality of our legal
research instruction. Therefore, at least as the result of our
experience, I do not think it's satisfactory to wait for unilateral
action on the part of the provider.
