Public in the County Law Library

I encountered my first disgruntled "J.Q. Public." Here's the scenerio :
He came in looking for a certain PA Statute inwhich he was charged with.
He was to go infront of a D.J. in a week. I handed him the proper
Purdon's volume. He was looking up the case law and seemed to have been
satisfied when he left. He did not ask me any more questions.

Well, today, he comes in. Asks for the volume. Read it. Comes up to me
and says I should get a new version because my copy is not current. The
part he was charged with had been changed in 1985. I explained to him
that the pocket part up-dates the law. He was not happy. He said
something should explain how to use these books.

I could not say anything...or what I wanted to. I do not remember
whether I told him that the pocket parts updates the volume when he first
came in. I try to do that.

My problem is what should I do in the future to prevent this from further
happening. I know it is not my fault the person chose to represent
himself. I find that line of legal advice and legal reference popping up
quite often with the number of people who come in to do research; who are
not attorneys. Can someone give me words of wisdom or advice? I have
handled "problem patrons" before, but this one seems to be bugging me.

Thanks,
Lori Miller
