The staff at the Pappas Law Library at Boston University School
of Law is currently searching for qualified candidates for the
position of Reference or Senior Reference Librarian. The position
is available immediately, and we will begin to review
applications upon their arrival. The position will remain open
until filled.
 
BACKGROUND
The Pappas Law Library serves primarily the Boston University Law
School community,which represents an enrollment of 1200 full-time
J.D. students and 200 LL.M. graduate students. The library staff
consists of 26 persons, including ten professionals, five
paraprofessionals and eleven support staff. The collection now
consists of over 460,000 volumes. The law library is also a
selective depository of U.S. Government documents. The Law
School is located in the Law Tower, a 17-story building
overlooking the Charles River in Boston.
 
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Reference/Senior Reference Librarian position for which we
are currently conducting a search is one of four full-time
professional reference librarian positions on our staff. This
position will include coordination of the student online legal
research training program. In this capacity, the librarian will
develop basic, advanced and specialized WESTLAW and LEXIS
instructional programs for J.D. students, graduate law students,
and law journal members. The position also includes coordinating
with the CALR academic representatives to hire and supervise
eight part-time law students as student representatives. This
librarian may also be asked to assist in providing individual and
group training sessions for B.U. law faculty members and to
assist them with CALR-related questions.
 
The reference librarians have ample opportunities to teach
specialized research classes in conjunction with substantive law
courses, as well as through the library's own research training
sessions. Each reference librarian is responsible for developing
an expert knowledge in a specific substantive area of law to
provide support to special programs and curriculum emphases in
the law school. Current specialty areas include tax law,
international law, banking law, public health law, and
intellectual property law. All reference librarians also
participate as principal selector in the acquisitions process on
a rotating basis for a two-month period. The selector has
primary responsibility for reviewing publishers' announcements
and making recommendations to the collection development
committee. The reference librarians are requested to provide
input on difficult acquisitions decisions relating their special
area of expertise.
 
SCHEDULE
All librarians are required to work one evening per week. Some
weekend work may also be required. Special consideration will be
given to candidates who are able to work a Sunday-through -
Thursday schedule.
 
REQUIREMENTS
M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited library school required; J.D.
from an A.B.A. accredited law school strongly preferred. One to
three years relevant experience required. Substantial
knowledge of WESTLAW/DIALOG, LEXIS/NEXIS, and RLIN or OCLC.
Strong service orientation and organization skills essential.
The successful candidate will be hired in at the rank of
Reference or Senior Reference Librarian depending on the years
and breadth of experience.
 
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The salary for this reference position will be commensurate with
qualifications and experience. The University offers excellent

for attending professional conferences and workshops. Research
grants have recently become available for professional staff
members for work on special projects. Professional and
paraprofessional staff are encouraged to actively participate in
professional associations on the local, regional and national
levels.
