Seminar Highlights:
This course is designed to assist you in positioning yourself and your
organization to understand the opportunities and rewards to be gained with
active use of the Internet.
1. Use e-mail and proper mail addressing techniques to reach
individuals throughout Internet, BITNET, USENET, Compuserve
and other networks. Learn creative methods to attempt to
"turn-up" someone's e-mail address.
2. Get the most out of LISTSERV, News Groups and other
Internet-based Discussion Groups.
3. Find files of interest on the Internet and use ftp (file
transfer protocol) to retrieve those files. Learn the
techniques to work with text files and image/binary files
and how to decompress and/or UUdecode files.
4. Use gopher, WAIS and WEB tools to locate and access
resources of interest.
The instructor recounts many stories of how the Internet has been used to
solve professional questions/problems.
The instructor will be demonstrating hands-on use of the latest PPP DOS and
Windows TCP/IP software technologies to access the Internet from a notebook PC.
The seminar closes with a section on the options and costs for acquiring
an individual or institutional Internet account, including:
* a Unix shell account
* a batch dial-up account
* PPP/SLIP technology for personal host access
* Desktop/LAN high-speed access
This course has been presented since 1991 and has recently undergone it's
seventh enhancement.
