More on Bar Codes for Law Reviews

I strongly urge each of you to make it your personal crusade to
get your schools' law journals to print bar codes on the cover of each
issue of their journals. As I have discovered, the process for getting
these is rather simple. Spurred by the appearance of the bar code on
LLJ, Peter Beck at AALL was kind enough to send me some information. In
short, here's what you need to know:
Reuseable film masters can be produced by a company called PIPS
(Publication Identification and Processing Systems) 1-800-358-7226 or
1-212-996-6000. (Reliable in the industry, I am told.) To order such a
master, you must have the following information from your law review printer:
        [1] ISSN
        [2] film negative or positive
        [3] emulsion up or down
[4] kind of paper stock used for cover (some slick paper
requires a different kind of image)
You then must decide where on the cover the bar code should be printed.
There is quite a lot of variation, but the bottom corners of the front
cover are sometimes used and all corners on the back cover are possible.

The Washington Law Review publishes 4 issues per
year and so we need a set of four masters since we number our issues.
The masters are reuseable each year. One master for one issue is $25.00;
a set of 4 issues is $22.50 each or $90. Our review is printed by Joe
Christensen in Lincoln, Nebraska, and I was told that they want negative
film, right read emulsion down for our review.
Thanks to whoever raised this issue again. Let's see how many
journals we can add to the scannable list! Law librarians can help make
this happen!
I know Innovative does not yet support this scanning for
check-in, but the appearance of the bar code on many of the incoming
journals will surely prompt Innovative to put this project on higher
priority.
