Here's another trivia contest of sorts. (Since we're now including the
answers on the bottom of the page, it's not much of a contest.) It asks
readers to match Supreme Court Justices with books about them -- and gives
some tips on how to use our on-line catalog.
Feel free to use or adapt.
THE TOP TEN JUSTICES
A 1990 survey of legal scholars, lawyers and judges concludes that
the following are the greatest ten Supreme Court Justices:
1. John Marshall
2. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
3. Earl Warren
4. Louis Brandeis
5. William Brennan, Jr.
6. Hugo Black
7. John Marshall Harlan (d. 1911)
8. William O. Douglas
9. Felix Frankfurter
10. Benjamin Cardozo
Tony Mauro, The Latest Catalog of the Court's Top 10, Legal Times, Oct.
25, 1993, at 12 (citing William Pederson and Norman Provizer, Great
Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court). (Recent issues of Legal Times are
available at the Reserve Desk; issues that are at least several months old
are in microfiche in the Reading Room cabinets.)
The Gallagher Law Library has many books by and about these justices.
To locate a biography, type in the justice's name, last name first, in the
SUBJECT box in the catalog. To find books by a justice, use the AUTHOR
box. To find an assortment of biographies -- of judges, lawyers,
presidents, and other individuals -- just type the word "biography" in the
SUBJECT box.
A new biography of Justice Brennan (which has been ordered but has
not yet been received) is A Justice for All: William J. Brennan and the
Decisions that Transformed America. Can you match the ten justices above
with the books below?
