Subject: Alert Univ. of Rhode Island
In the midst of prerations for commencement the news broke
that the University of Rhode Island is in deep fiscal crisis:
a $8 - $9 million deficit resulting in the layoffs of all
the lecturers, part-time faculty, other untenured and
non-tenure-track people, layoffs in the administrative
offices, decrease in the number of sections of courses,
and cancellations of master's programs except of a few
of the science programs.
The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies is
targeted, although no decisions have been made so far.
As a person who has worked at GSLIS for ten years and
recently returned from Finland to help in the school's
administration, I urge everyone and all library professionals,
educators, users and friends of libraries, and those who
care for excellent information services in New England and
beyond to offer their support and help to the school now.
Leena Siitonen, Ph.D.
Associate Professor until June 1994
now as Adjunct Professor
