ariel- purchase

If a representative from those institutions that have ARIEL software would
consider joining the lawariel listserv (LAWARIEL-L), we might be
better able 1) to find each other and 2) to get the "network"
working. I suspect it is just like the fax machine back in the stone
ages---there have to be enough of them out there to make a go of it.

ARIEL *momentum* in the law setting, is still pretty darn low....not enough
critical mass to do much with it. But it seems to be prospering in other
library communities. So I think it is worth exploring and talking about.

I am not suggesting that everybody go out and buy it. I am just advocating
that those of us who have it, get our "collective act" together, to see if
there is a benefit to the larger law library community.

I am confident that lawariel-l will be a low volume listserv--
for those of you worried about the information overload issue. Believe
me..I am worried about the information overload issue too.... I live
under a snow storm of email. Anyway...if this sounds interesting:

  1) to subscribe, send a message to listserv@lawlib.wuacc.edu

  2) message should say: subscribe lawariel-l your name

Below is the marketing/PR/blurb that RLG puts out concerning ARIEL..tells
you what it is and what it requires.

ARIEL FOR WINDOWS - RLG's Windows-based Document Transmission Software

Ariel is an innovative new document transmission system from the Research
Libraries Group. Using commercially available hardware and RLG's Ariel
software, users can scan articles, photos, and similar documents, transmit
the resulting electronic images through their Ethernet LAN over the
Internet to each other's Ariel workstations, and print them on a laser printer.

The system, which is optimized for Internet transmission, is faster, more
reliable, and less expensive to use than fax and produces images of greater
resolution and quality.

Ariel for Windows includes many features designed to let your
document transmission tasks easier and more efficient and
cost-effective:

* User-friendly Windows interface makes Ariel a snap.

* Ariel lets you put your equipment where it does the most good.
Keep your scanner in the stacks, your PC at the interlibrary loan
desk, and your printer wherever you please. If they're on your
Windows-based network, they'll work together with Ariel.

* Lets you work with a wide range of popular printers and
scanners, even scanners with document feeders.

* More storage capacity and shorter transmission times with group
   4 compression.

* A whole new world of connectivity with FTP file transfer*the
   Internet standard.

* Lets you print on letter, legal, or A4 paper no matter what size
the original, for effortless international transmissions.

* Works in the background while you get the rest of your work
   done.

* Imports TIFF document files created by other programs so you can
use the images you've already scanned.

* Lets you forward documents you've received to other Ariel sites.

* Flexible "address book" means good-bye to re-keying.

* Integrated intelligent logging helps you keep track of what
you've done and when you've done it.

* Plenty of online help when and where you need it.

* Powerful file management options let you send your files when
you want...and build an archive of frequently used files.

* Now more than ever, "Ariel out-faxes the fax."

Ariel for DOS 2.0

An upgraded version of Ariel for DOS users is also available.
Ariel for DOS 2.0 will *not* contain any of the new features of the
Windows product, but it will be able to communicate with the Windows
version, and other Ariel 2.0 for DOS sites. The interface for Ariel
2.0 for DOS and all other user features will be exactly the same as
the current version of Ariel.

Ariel 2.0 will be free to current users via anonymous ftp, or by
mail at a minimal charge. See the section on pricing below for
further details.

Obtaining Ariel for DOS 2.0

To obtain the Ariel for DOS 2.0 upgrade (you must be a
current Ariel user/owner):

1. Establish an anonymous ftp connection with lyra.stanford.edu.

2. Move to the subdirectory /pub/ariel/a20

         CD /pub/ariel/a20

3. Transfer the file DOSARI20.EXE into a temporary subdirectory,
   i.e., NOT your Ariel directory:

         GET DOSARI20.EXE

4. Extract the program files by typing 'DOSARI20' at the DOS
   prompt.

5. The README.TXT file provides information on installing
Ariel for DOS 2.0, and for running both Ariel for DOS 1.12
and Ariel for DOS 2.0 on the same machine.

Note that the files that you will be retrieving are not sufficient
in themselves to run Ariel. If you're not a current Ariel user,
and you wish to obtain Ariel for DOS 2.0, you should contact RLG's
Distribution Services Center (e-mail: bl.dsc@rlg.stanford.edu, FAX:
415.964.0943) for ordering information.

Compatibility with Earlier Versions of Ariel

Due to changes in the underlying architecture described above, Ariel
for Windows *will not* be compatible with the current version of
Ariel, Ariel 1.12, or any earlier versions. With the release of
Ariel for Windows and Ariel 2.0 for DOS, RLG will discontinue
support of all earlier versions of Ariel.

All current users of Ariel *must* upgrade their Ariel systems to be
able to communicate with each other. Current users will be able to
do this by:

  * Ugrading to the Windows version

     OR

  * Upgrading to Ariel 2.0 for DOS

All Ariel users will have to switch to one of these two versions by
September 30, 1994, Ariel Switchover Day.

Scanners

HP ScanJet IIp with scanner interface
           (scans 8-1/2" x 11" page)
                 or
HP ScanJet IIc or IIcx with scanner interface
           (scans up to 8-1/2" x 14" page)
                 or
Fujitsu Scanners M3093, M3906, or M3097 with scanner interface
                 or
Scanners with TWAIN- or ISIS-compatible interface drivers

Note: Two scanners that are no longer being manufactured are also
compatible with Ariel: the HP ScanJet Plus and the Panasonic
FS-RS506.

The Fujitsu scanners are the fastest (and most expensive) scanners
on the supported list. Although the HP IIc is color-capable, Ariel
will not produce image files that can be printed in color; the files
scanned by Ariel with the IIc/IIcx will print as black and white images.
The HP and Fujitsu scanners can be supplemented with an "ADF"
(automatic document feeder), to speed up scanning (and to allow
scanning of legal size originals on the HP ScanJet Plus and ScanJet
IIp models). The Fujitsu scanners are not supported by Ariel 1.XX.

Fujitsu Scanners

Since Fujitsu does not include adapters or drivers for their scanners, you need
to purchase the necessary hardware and software from third-party vendors. To
work with Ariel, the Fujitsu M3096 scanner requires:

  * a SCSI adapter that supports the Advanced SCSI
    Programming Interface (ASPI)

  * a Fujitsu ISIS (Image and Scanner Interface
    Specification) driver

  * a SETSCAN.INI file configured for the M3096.

The ASPI driver is supplied with your SCSI adapter and is usually loaded in
your CONFIG.SYS file. The ISIS driver and SETSCAN.INI file are provided on the
Ariel for Windows installation disk. The driver is copied along with other
program files when you set up Ariel for Windows. The INI file is copied if you
choose Fujitsu M3096 as your scanner type. Using the ISIS driver requires an
M3096 equipped with an image compression board.

Ariel for Windows should also work with other Fujitsu scanners that are
supported by an ISIS driver.

For more information about ISIS drivers contact: Fujitsu Corporation of
America, 2904 Orchard Parkway, San Jose, CA 95134 (800) 626-4686 or (408)
432-6333 or Pixel Translations, Inc., 10062 Miller Ave., Suite 205, Cupertino,
CA 95014 (408) 865-6600 FAX (408) 446-4852.

Printers

      Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4, LaserJet 4 Si, LaserJet 4+

Note: Any Windows-compatible printer works with the Windows
version of Ariel, but acceptable performance requires a
printer as least as fast as the Hewlett-Packard printers
listed above. PostScript printers are not recommended, since
TIFF files (and all bit-mapped image files) print very slowly
      on PostScript printers.
