Matthew Bender's Technical Support Department has read the comments
regarding networking our Search Master CD-ROM products. We are concerned
to learn that some of our customers are struggling with some technical
issues. We'd like to help!
First, we would like to let our current customers and potential
customers know that Windows for Workgroups version 3.11 (WFW3.11) is a
successful networking option for Search Master. The only known limitation
is the inability to print from Search Master to a shared (non-local)
printer. The solution to this problem is to load the WFW3.11 network
drivers in DOS. This of course will reduce the amount of conventional
memory you have available. If this is not a viable solution, a
work-around is to save the document to a file, then retrieve and print
from your word processor. Currently, there is a Windows version of Search
Master in development that will alleviate any and all printing problems.
If you are currently using a Netware Lite network, and are unable to
print to your shared printer, we can provide a public domain patch
(L11U05.EXE), created by Novell, that fixes the problem. In order to
apply the patch, you must be using version 1.1. If you have version 1.0,
we have the patch (NWL11E.EXE) that will upgrade from version 1.0 to 1.1.
The problem mentioned about the "wildcard" lockups (running a search
with a ! or *) is addressed with the newest Search Master version, 4.30.
We do have some customers who have reported that this problem persists
and the resolution is pending. We will continue to work with those
customers until there is a *satisfactory* resolution that is acceptable.
Please contact us if you have installed version 4.30 and still have the
problem. Many lockup problems can be easily solved by making sure in
the CONFIG.SYS file that FILES are at least 40 and that BUFFERS are set
to at least 30. Also, make sure that in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, on the
MSCDEX.EXE line, that the parameter /M: exists and that it is set to at
least 10 (i.e. /M:10). If it does not exist, it should be added to the
end of the line.
We appreciate your feedback. When we learn more about the
problems that our electronic product customers face, we can develop
better solutions and inform our programmers about the improvements
required for your complete satisfaction. For personalized help with
your specific technical situation, our support specialists can be
reached at 800-223-5297, Monday through Friday--8:30 a.m. until
