John, while there are some people who spend their time defending the
rights of monopolies to charge high prices, I am not one of them. Local
exchange telephone carriers are in most markets, certainly in mine,
monopolies. There is interest in changing this, so that it will be legal
to compete against these companies. The proposed language which we
support regarding ISDN tariffs, would only require dominant carriers
(i.e., the current monopolist) to quit gouging consumers for ISDN
services. AND, the provision would sunset when the local exchange
carrier actually faced some competition, leaving the market to determine
prices thereafter. jamie
